Is Cocaine A Stimulant?

Cocaine is a stimulant drug as it can directly affect your central nervous system. The illicit substance comes in a white powder form derived from coca leaves that are grown in several areas in South America. It is a very strong stimulant that has the same effects as that of amphetamines.

  • Stimulants, or “uppers” as they are sometimes called, can temporarily increase your energy and alertness.
  • The most common street drugs under this category are amphetamines and cocaine.
  • Prescription stimulants are available in capsule or tablet form.
  • Those who abuse this type of medication often swallow or inject the liquid form of the medication or crush and snort it.

The history of stimulants.

Years ago, Andean Indians chew on coca leaves- the raw ingredient used to produce cocaine. When the Spaniards arrived in South America, they claimed the practice as ungodly but transported coca leaves to Europe.

The cocaine we know today was first synthesized back in 1885 although the effects of the substance were not yet recognized in the medical setting until 1880. Among the famous people who used and prescribed the drug was Sigmund Freud, who promoted cocaine use as a tonic. However, he later admitted that cocaine has some drawbacks and dangers.

Another famous source of cocaine was introduced by the founder of Coca-Cola, John Pemberton in 1886. Coca-cola was previously made with cocaine, caffeine, and syrup. However, due to pressure from the public, the content of cocaine was dropped by the year 1903.

Cocaine was introduced in the UK by the 19th century as a useful tonic and “pick-me-up” drink, although it was yet to be known or used as a party drug in a pure powder form. Cocaine was first declared illegal in the WWI when the panic spread was recognized mostly from Germany with cocaine being sold to the British troops. In 1930, cocaine was almost nowhere to be found in the UK with the replacement of amphetamines and efforts to stamp the drug out.

In the recent years, cocaine use has been increasing and reduced prices make the drug more available to a wide variety of people and not just the well-off ones. Cocaine, until today, is still a lot more expensive than other stimulants including amphetamines.

Crack, on the other hand, started from a legend by the Yanqui drug traffickers of the early 70s to test the purity of cocaine bought in South America. Crack first became common in big cities in the U.S. like in New York, Washington, and in Los Angeles. Eventually, it reached the UK although it is still somewhat rare.

The stimulants’ short-term effects.

Anyone on cocaine may experience depression, apathy, and exhaustion, more popular by the collective term “downs” that immediately follows the “up.” Due to the immediate and long-lasting exhaustion, many drug users often resort to using the stimulant again. Soon, these individuals will no longer be attempting to get “high,” but just to feel “well” and feel some energy.

The stimulants’ long-term effects.

Stimulants are often addictive. The repeated dose of stimulants in high levels can lead to users feeling either paranoid or hostile. High doses can also lead to dangerous body temperatures and irregular heartbeat.
